His Royal Highness Ponzoh Johnson Joro Magaji, Ujah of Anaguta |
Today, 7th May is the Ujah Unity Day. A day set aside by the Ujah Anaguta of Jos and President, Jos North Traditional Council to bring all his subjects in his domain together to show case their rich culture and to interact with one another as part of the chiefdom's efforts toward promotion of peaceful coexistence among the various ethnic nationalities in the Area.
Highlights of today's event include appointment of new ward heads to replace those that passed away, installation of new tile holders cutting across different ethnic nationalities in Jos North and lunching of an endowment fund to cater for widows and orphans in Area.
No doubt, Jos North is cosmopolitan in nature and set-up. It is so not by anyone's design but that of God's. The city has witnessed lots of upheavals leading to the polarization of the city along ethnic-religious lines for over two decades.
Those senseless skirmishes retarded the growth and development of the city. Consequently, any effort at fostering unity and peaceful coexistence in Jos North is a very welcome development.
The traditional institution is well placed to carry out this gigantic task of uniting the various ethnic nationalities that make up Jos North Local Government Area. It is apolitical and it commands respect from all and sundry.
The executive chairman, Jos North Local Government Council, Hon. Shehu Bala Usman started this unification move in the composition of members of his cabinet. He ensured spread in the appointment of Supervisory Councillors, depicting the cosmopolitan nature of the Area. This has ultimately led to adequate representation of virtually all segments of interests. Slots are given to People representing the Central and Southern Zones of the state. The Council has therefore, promoted and encouraged harmonious and peaceful coexistence and a feeling or sense of belonging.
Now that the Ujah has opened his royal doors to all in Jos North, surely the cornerstone for a new and better Jos North is being laid today. If this new initiative is sustained and fully supported by governments at all levels, surely we will see a new Jos North where peace and unity will reign supreme. This will be the beginning for a more prosperous Jos North where every stakeholder will be willing to lay his/her life towards preserving it.
Kudos to His Royal Majesty Pozoh Johnson Jauro Magaji II. May your reign last in good health and prosperity. True leadership entails inclusiveness, which has been lacking in Jos. Now we have found it in you and we all have a collective duty to sustain it.
Ishaq is the Supervisory Councillor, Special Duties, Jos North Local Government Council, Plateau State.
