The Executive Chairman of Kanke Local Government, Plateau State North-Central Nigeria, Hon. Emmanuel Lar has reiterated the need to observed environmental and personal standard hygiene in order to stop or mitigate the spread of the dreaded Coronavirus (COVID-19).
In an exclusive chat with African Drum, Hon. Lar said that in addition to intensive sensitization, his Local Government has also put in place necessary measures to ensure strict enforcement at boarders and entry points into the local government areas in line with the state government's directive.
"The state government as you already knows has put in place some preventive measures in which all the Local Government Chairmen have replicated in our various local government areas. “And the major issue is prevention since we have not recorded any case yet. So, what we are doing now is intensive sensitization to let the people know the danger of the disease and how they can prevent it.

“The second aspect is that of enforcement to make sure that the government said should be done is done in a proper way. We have a duty to protect our boarders to ensure that people who come in are properly checked to ensure they do not import the disease into the local government and the state at large", he said.

On the total lockdown and fumigation of the state, the Chairman said that the idea was part of the measures taken to ensure that even if the disease was in the state, would not spread. "The idea itself is a good one even if not for COVID-19 but for other diseases such as malaria. We should ask ourselves when last was there total fumigation of the state? But COVID-19 has afforded us the opportunity to do that", he said.
Hon. Lar further said that government was planning palliative measures to cushion the effect of the total lockdown.

He however, called on all to bear in mind that these are times that require everybody's sacrifice because it's not just ordinary lockdown but one that is aimed at saving lives. "It's only the living that can eat; it's only the living that goes to the market. So, while government is doing its best, the people must know there is the need for some form of sacrifice so that together, we can chase the disease away", he said.
Lar added that the economic loss as a result of the disease would be huge across the globe.
