WITHOUT A NAME: Fleshing Bare Bones Into A Seminal Work - By Wolime Goyit
November 07, 2024
Saturday, November 9, 2024, a 438-page literary endeavor from the pen of veteran journalist, writer and administrator, Emma Gogwim Kayi will be released to the reading public. A record of personal memoirs and snippets of historical events, the book goes by the improbable title, WITHOUT A NAME.
It is a mark of the authors prodigious talent that under that pretentious title, he finds his identity, with which he takes the reader through the epochs that shaped his own life and career. But, more than his own story, he provides the lens through which his reader has glimpses of the Nigerian story.
Employing the first person narrative, the book opens in the most dramatic way, as the author is set to rough it out in an intense emotional moment. But that is just one of many dilemmas that characterize the story as he navigates the turns, descends the valleys and scales the bumps that writing on the variegated issues in the book entails.
Emma Gogwim Kayis professional career began in 1987 at The Nigeria Standard, the Plateau State-owned newspaper where some of the best hands in print journalism were found in its heyday. With requisite training in the humanities, and a strong character that suited the exacting work ethics of the organization, he found the platform to report, write and comment on the various subjects that are meaningful to him and relevant to the development of the society.

Download eBook: "The Drone Assassin Reloaded"
The author tells his story in thirteen chapters, weaving it around a multiplicity of themes, all dovetailing into an exciting tapestry of the Nigerian story: its rustic innocence, its urban sophistication, its endless possibilities and inherent contradictions. Inspired by his childhood, nativity and education, his journalistic work and public service career, Emma Gogwim Kayi finds the bare bones that he fleshes out into the seminal work that is billed for public presentation.
In typical reportorial style, the writer takes you to the picturesque hills of Golten, in Kanke LGA of Plateau State, where he was born, lets you in on his genealogy and makes you experience the social and cultural conditions in which he grew up. The first child of Christian missionary parents, the real world began to unfold before the author early enough, as his parents took the family to distant places, exposing him to ways and standards that today affect the way he interprets his world.
Confronting the tragedy of the Nigerian union, the author beholds the countrys fault lines, and then provides harrowing examples of the disturbances inspired by religion and ethnicity. His perception of Nigeria and its burdensome divisions would also seem to come from his involvement with activities that drove students movements on university campuses in the 1970s and 1980s. Deeply affected by the ideological tendencies of that era, his radical slant, if subdued, is no doubt a chip off that era.
_______________________________________________
_______________________________________________
What is more, that streak began to find subtle expression at The Nigeria Standard, where he had joined a radical band, mostly former university graduates who had come out of the trenches of activism. The intellectual energy provided by the work environment at the time helped sharpen his perspectives on sundry matters. And such matters as the gains and pains of visioning would coalesce into a treatise on the bold vision of the papers founder, JD Gomwalk.
Emma Gogwim Kayi became the editor of the newspaper in a meteoric rise that occurred within four years, beginning from his first appointment as a features writer in 1987.
His book records many defining moments of that era among which was the principled stand of the papers editors on the inconclusive results of the 1993 presidential election.
Rising to the peak of his professional career, paying his dues in a field that had given him a name, the twilight of that phase had come. And the writer and journalist would, first, gravitate to local government administration where he was, at different times, secretary of Kanke Local Government Council and sole administrator, and then the state bureaucracy where he rose to the positon of Permanent Secretary before his exit from public service.
Funny, yet serious; intriguing, but revealing, WITHOUT A NAME slows down as you catch your breath under an appropriately titled chapter, The End is Near. The author recounts such sobering moments as his fathers death, mind-numbing massacres in many of Plateaus communities, marriage and family, visit to the Holy Land, among other highlights of his eventful career.
Delivered in elegant prose, WITHOUT A NAME indeed brings together shreds of information about a life, career and a dream. But it is about us all.

Musa Umar Yashi: The Face Of Hope In Bauchi
Musa Umar Yashi: The Face Of Hope In Bauchi, Written By Mallam Gambo Hamza

| Mallam Musa Umar Yashi |
The recent nationwide protests against hunger and bad governance may have come and gone but have certainly left some hard lessons to learn by not only government officials, but also political actors across all Parties.
Bauchi State stands out as a shining example where the protest did not make any meaningful impact largely due to the influence and silent maneuvers of one prominent son of the State.
Unknown to many people, a major stakeholder who played a prominent role in dousing tension and dissuading the people not to join in the protest, was Mal Musa Umar Yashi, the indefatigable Executive Director of Humanitarian Affairs of the North East Development Commission NEDC who worked assiduously behind the scene to play down the protest.
He was able to convince the patriotic and good people of Bauchi State from being misguidedly mobilized and secretly marketed for violence by the State Apparatchiks who were trying at all cost, to use the opportunity as a symbol of negativism, to boost their waning public acceptability and dwindling relevance in the society.
It can be said without any iota of doubt or contradiction, that the role played by Mal Musa Yashi can be equated with that of a Presidential Liason Officer for the Tinubu Administration in Bauchi.
Since the formation of APC in 2014, he has been an active member, supporter and financier of the Party and his contributions to the growth and development of the Party particularly during the last Presidential elections, did not escape attention of political watchers in the State who see him as the Face of APC in the State.
No doubt, Mal Yashi has been one public officer who continuously sacrificed time and enormous resources rallying support for the Tinubu administration as if he was the APC Chairman in Bauchi. He actively sponsored series of political campaigns and supported various activities for the Tinubu/Shettima Presidential team across the nooks and crannies of the State which resulted in the monumental victory of the APC against a formidable PDP which has the State machinery at its disposal.
It can be deduced that Mal Yashi has a deep sense of loyalty, respect and admiration for President Tinubu as evidenced by his enthusiastic campaign support since the President declared his aspiration for the number one seat of the country. Mallam Yashi's unwavering dedication and commitment to the Presidential team, showcase a strong bond of friendship and trust between him and the President.
To solidify his support for the President and rally round the people around the administration, Mal Musa Yashi as the God anointed Executive Director Humanitarian Affairs of the NEDC, came up with strategic humanitarian intervention programme anchored on the Renewed Hope Agenda of the President.
The Commission was able to distribute palliative items to hundreds of thousands of people across the North East region worth billions of naira.
These interventions to a large extent, helped to cushion the effect of the hardship faced by the people especially after the withdrawal of fuel subsidy.
Various Communities and groups, have benefitted immensely from relief materials including rice, spaghetti, macaroni, sugar, ground oil, clothing materials etc.
His goodwill, generosity, humanitarian support and assistance knows no bounds.
Beyond the distribution of palliative items, Mal Yashi has also touched the lives of other people in numerous ways.
Through skilful planning and execution, he was able to bring the humanitarian crisis in the North East under control with over two million Internally Displaced Persons, IDPs so far resettled at their communities and have since resumed normal life.

Infact across the region particularly in Bauchi State, the North East Development Commission NEDC, has become a permanent reference for Humanitarian doctrine at all times courtesy of the dynamic gesture of Mallam Musa Yashi, whom the refugees of the Boko Haram insurgency, have nicknamed "Mal Musa Yashi SAVE LIFE"
More importantly, Mallam Yashi under whose portfolio the responsibility of managing the affairs of thousands of displaced persons in the zone directly fall, similarly engaged in a speedy reintegration of victims of the insurgency into society with many of the repentant Boko Haram members already re-integrated into society.
He has indeed paid his dues over the years by contributing his quota to the political, social and economic development of Bauchi State and the entire region.
2027 should be a pay back time for Mal Yashi generally regarded as a man of the people, for the people and by the people.
He remains a living legend, untainted moral standard bearer, an embodiment of hope and peace as well as a bridge builder who will take Bauchi State to enviable heights.

NEDC To Reconstruct Wagga Bridge In Adamawa Destroyed By Flood
The North East Development Commission, NEDC has pledged to reconstruct the collapsed Wagga-Madagali bridge in Adamawa State which links Adamawa with Borno State.
The bridge was destroyed by massive flood in the area which cut off any form of transactions between the two States.
![]() |
| MICIFA Raffia Platform Sandals for Women Crochet Wedges Cute Comfortable woven Flats Sandals with Buckle Open Toe Casual Straw Sandals Shoes |
Managing Director of NEDC Mohammed Goni Alkali, who visited the area on an assessment tour expressed serious concern about the collapsed bridge and said everything possible will be done to reconstruct the bridge and restore means of livelihood of the people.
The visit follows a Presidential directive to the Commission to undertake immediate assessment of the situation and proffer remedial solution to ease the difficulties of Commuters.
The MD lamented that the collapse of the bridge, has already disconnected the two States, adding that the major responsibility of the Commission is to provide services that have direct bearing on the lives of the people of the North East region.
Alkali, who visited the collapsed bridge along with other Management staff and officials of Triacta Construction Company, directed the manager to immediately carry out a survey of the bridge to enable the Commission to take swift actions.
Receiving officials of the NEDC at Government House, Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Fintiri, thanked the Commission for its consistent intervention in the State over the years.
He expressed willingness of his Government to partner with the NEDC in whatever way possible towards the immediate reconstruction of the Wagga-Madagali bridge for the benefit of the people.

A resident of Madagali Mathew Maziga, appreciated NEDC for the various projects in the area and appealed for urgent consideration of the Wagga-Madagali bridge.
According to him, the Wagga-Madagali road as well as its bridge, are very important to the people of the area as it links not only Adamawa and Borno but also some other villages and farms.
Following the flood which completely destroyed the bridge, Commuters in the now face severe difficulties with regards to movement of goods and services. For now, goods have to be offloaded and replaced at each end of the waters between the two States.
The bridge is strategic for being the only link between northern Adamawa on that side and neighboring southern Borno. It is highly valued by the people in those areas, hence the anxiety about the bridge remaining passable.
Before rounding up their engagement, the NEDC team also took time off to inspect other projects along the Wagga-Madagali high way.
During an inspection visit to two bridges under construction, the NEDC team discovered that they are also being threatened by flood which calls for urgent measure to be taken to avert their imminent collapse.
It would be recalled that following reports of imminent collapse of the Wagga-Madagali bridge two months ago, the NEDC MD/CEO had undertaken a preemptive tour of the project to avert its collapse by giving the assurance that NEDC will take appropriate measures to reconstruct the bridge.
However, before the NEDC Engineers could be mobilized to site, heavy flood caused the collapse of the bridge.
Aside the Wagga-Madagali bridge, the Commission had earlier constructed some major bridges in Adamawa State including those of Kudzum and Dilichum.
