Following
the sit-at-home order by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) today in
protest against the killings, arrest and unlawful detention of its members, as
well as against the Operation Python Dance 3 in the South East of the country,
security is reportedly beefed up in Onitsha, the commercial hub of Anambra
State.
Sources
said, fierce looking security operatives in the State comprising of the Army,
Navy, Police and DSS and other security agencies were seen moving in long
convoy in what it was called ‘a show of force’ in Onitsha.
One
of the security personnel who spoke to our source however said that the essence
of the show of force was to give members of the public confidence and to assure
their safety and make sure the call by IPOB to sit at home was ignored.
He
further urged members of the public to open their shops and to also go about
their normal businesses as their security was guaranteed, warning members of
IPOB to desist from intimidating, harassing and forcing members of the public
to obey its sit-at-home order which he said was unlawful.
He
stated that about 13 members of Biafra Independent Movement (BIM) headed by
Chief Ralph Uwazurike in Biafran Uniform were arrested in a vehicle along
Ifitidendunu in Dunukofia Local Government Area of the State on their way to
their office.
Sources
who spoke to TheWill on condition of anonymity said that almost all the streets
in Onitsha were empty as people stayed in-door in compliance with IPOB
sit-at-home order.
The
joint team of security was seen moving along major roads and streets at the
bridge head, upper Iweka, Awka road, old market road down to main market as
well as Nkpor and Ogidi area of the State.
