KATAKO MARKET GUTTED BY FIRE

Part of the popular Katako market
in Jos, Plateau State, North-Central Nigeria was gutted by fire yesterday
night.
Eye witness informed African Drum that the fire started at
about 7:45pm and lasted for almost two hours before men of the fire service
arrived.

Speaking to African Drum, one of the victims who wouldn’t want her name in
print said her shop was raised down by the fire consuming four sewing machines
and knitting materials.
Another victim who simply gave
his name as Mallam Isa said he loss soap making chemicals and other materials
worth over two million naira.
Ibrahim I. Suleiman, the
secretary of Traders Association Katako Market told our man that the area
affected by the fire was soap, detergent and air freshener making as well as
tailoring section adding that the inferno destroyed items and property worth over
twenty million naira. He said the cause of the fire was not known as the
section does not utilize power from Power Holding Company. He believed the
incident was the will of God and called on the government to assist victims as
their source of livelihood has been consumed. He commended the vigilante group
in the area for being vigilant and ensured that hoodlums did not use the
opportunity to vandalize other shops.

Ilu, the commandant Nigeria Vigilante Group, Laranto and Apata ward said when
the incident happened, he quickly mobilized his personnel and deployed them to
strategic positions to prevent the activities of hoodlums.
African Drum further learnt that
the fire incident yesterday was the second in less than six months.
