The Inspector General of Police (IGP)
Ibrahim Kpokun Idris last week said the force needs about N1.3 trillion annually to cover its over head costs to enable it
provide appropriate policing for Nigerians.
The IGP added that this is a far
cry from the N316 billion earmarked for
the force in the 2017 budget out of which only N8 billion had so far been released. Idris who spoke at a public
hearing on a bill for the establishment of the Police Development Fund by the Nigerian
Senate said that the former IGP, the Late MD Yusuf, had recommended a funding
of N506 billion for the force in 2008 and
further lamenting that based on yearly budgeting provisions made for the police,
the force was grossly underfunded leading to attendant incapacitation in
carrying out its fundamental duties of security, law and order across the
federation.
The police boss further disclosed
that out of the N19.9 billion required
to fuel 14,306 vehicles and 3,115 motorcycles on a yearly basis, only N16
billion was set aside for that purpose. According to him, the kitting of about
300,000 personnel of the force was also affected by the funding gap.
Senate president Dr. Bukola
Saraki who was represented at the event by the senate leader, Ahmed Lawan said
the police was indeed, grossly under-funded adding that the fund would ensure
adequate funding of the force.
