The Plateau
state Government has announced the receipt of the sum of Five billion, six
Hundred and fourty four Million, Seventy-Nine Thousand, and Fifty- Five naira
fourty one kobo( N5, 644,079,055.44k) being refund of the 2nd
tranche of the Paris/London club. This was disclosed during a press conference
by Mrs Tamwakat Weli, the Honourable Commissioner Ministry of Finance at
Ministry’s conference room on Thursday.
According to
the commissioner who was represented by the Permanent Secretary of the
ministry, Alhaji Sani A Yahaya the state’s share of the amount was
N3,389,833,880.68 representing 60% while the share for the 17 LGAs was
N2,254,174.73 representing 39.94% of the total figure. Giving a breakdown of
how the funds will be spent, the commissioner said that 50% of both the state’s
and LGAs’ shares would go on salaries/pension which amounted to N1,694,916,940.34
and N1,127,122,587.37 respectively while the remaining 50% of both state and
LGAs’ shares would go for capital and recurrent expenditures amounting to
N1,694,916,940.34 and N1,127,122,587.37 respectively.
Alh. Sani A Yahaya (M) Permanent Secretary (Ministry of Finance)
The
commissioner however, lamented that the N1,694,916,940.34 state’s share meant
for salaries/pension was not even enough to offset the outstanding overdraft
balance of N1,960,778,585.86 talk more of paying July salaries. “ As at today,
we have an overdraft(debit) balance of the sum of one billion Nine Hundred and
Sixty Million, Seven Hundred and seventy –Eight Thousand, Five Hundred and
Eighty Five naira Eighty- Six kobo
(N1,960,778,585.86) only, that has to be settled before the end of this month.
“Given the
background and the situation in which we presently found ourselves, the
50%(N1,694,916,940.34) propotion of the 2nd tranche due for payment
of the salaries/pension cannot even offset the current outstanding overdraft
balance of N1,960,778,585.86 talk more of paying the July salaries and the pension
in the average of N2.25billion”. She said.
She added
that the Lalong administration was mindful and committed to enhancing the
quality of life of the people of Plateau state and called on well meaning and
good people of the state to join hands with the rescue leader to bring to bear
meaningful contributions towards the growth and development of the state
stressing that this can only be achieved by coming together to enhance the
Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) of the state.
The
commissioner further craved the indulgence of the populace to seriously
consider paying all their outstanding and current taxes to be able to generate
the much needed IGR to enhance less dependency of allocation from the centre.
She equally
appealed for the understanding and patience of all in keying into the Voluntary
Asset and Income Declaration Scheme (VAIDS) which was signed into an executive
order by the Ag. President Yemi Osibanjo.
