EX-STF MEMBER FACES MURDER
CHARGE.
-FOR ALLEGEDLY KILLING HIS GIRL
FRIEND

A
24 year old man, Sunday Umar is facing a one Count Charge of Culpable Homicide
before Honourable Justice S.P. Gang of High Court 10, Barkin Ladi in the
Plateau State Judicial Division. The above named accused person was arrested on
23rd January, 2016 for allegedly committing the said offence
contrary to and punishable under Section 221 of the Penal Code.
The
accused who is an indigene of Naharati Village in Abaji Area Council of Federal
Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja was a soldier (before his dismissal from the
Army after the incident) was enlisted into the Nigerian Army in March 2012. He
is said to have committed the act while he was serving at the 3 Division
Garrison, Maxwell Khobe Cantonment, Rukuba on redeployment to Special Task
Force (STF) Jos Sector 7 Barkin Ladi. Sunday Umar is alleged to have
slaughtered one Miss Charity Thomas (his girl friend) and dumped her dead body
in a bush at Barkin Ladi. Late Charity is said to have met her death on 20th
January, 2016 at about 7pm when she visited the accused in Barkin Ladi from
Samaru in Kaduna State.
When
the case with ChargeNo. PLD/J35C/2016 between the Accused and
Commissioner of Police was first mentioned on 14th July, 2016, the
charge was read out to him thus; “That you Sunday Umaru ‘M’, age 24 years of
Naharati Sabo Abaji Area Council, FCT Abuja, on or about the 23/1/2016 at about
1900hrs at Sector 7 Barkin Ladi, Jos, in Barkin Ladi LGA of Plateau State
within the Jurisdiction of this Honourable Court did commit an illegal act, to
wit: Culpable Homicide punishable with death, when you armed yourself with a
knife, stabbed and slaughtered one Charity Thomas ‘F’ age 22 years to death.
You thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Sector 221 of
the Penal Code Laws of Northern Nigeria”.
The
accused plea was immediately taken thereafter, and he pleaded not guilty. In
November 2016, his bail application was granted.

When
the case came up yesterday, the Prosecuting Counsel, W.T. Aweh, Esq. from the
Ministry of Justice asked for an adjournment because the IPO who took the
accused statement was not in Court because he was on a special assignment in
Kaduna State. Defence Counsel, Barr. David Adudu did not oppose to the
application.
The
case was further adjourned to 19th October, 2017 for continuation of
hearing.
