PLATEAU STATE 2017 BUDGET

WORKS AND TRANSPORT TAKES ‘LION SHARE’ AS OVER N3 BILLION IS VOTED FOR ELECTION MATERIALS.

Works and transport has gotten the ‘lion share’ in the 2017 budget of Plateau State with an allocation of N18.1 billion representing 24.47% of the capital estimate. Addressing Journalists yesterday during a breakdown of the budget held at the conference hall of the cabinet office Jos, the Commissioner of Finance, Mrs. Tamwakat G. Weli said emphasis would be on the completion of on-going road projects and the initiation of other critical ones. According to the commissioner, some of the key projects earmarked for completion and commencement in the fiscal year include; Dualization of old Airport Junction – Rayfield – Bukuru with Spur to Dogon Karfe, Gbangdan & New Government House for N500million, Bassa-Binchi – Buyo with spur to Zagun, 250million, Bisichi – Karot – Dorowa Tsoho-Mangu Hale with spur to Kassa, Heipang and Kwi, N300million, Reconstruction and Resurfacing of Mararaban Jama’a, British America Junction Road, N1.2 billion, Dualizaiton of Rukuba Road – Miango – Dochai – Nigeria college of Accountancy Vom Farin Lamba N300million, Amper-Dengi Bashar Phase II N300million, Dyis – Kagu – Jipa – Kwa with spur to Mangun N200million, Wase – Mavo – Jawonso – Gimbi – Pinay – Demshiya N200 million, Shendam – Kallong – Shimanker Road N500million; Construction of Flyovers and interchange including under passes and slip Rd at old Airport, Secretariat Junction & British American Junction N500million, Jengre Amo Katako Road N200million among other projects.




She added that government is collaborating with the Federal Government in the upgrading of the Yakubu Gowon Airport with the sum of N400million as intervention while the sum of N605million is allocated to the state roads Maintenance Agency for the maintenance of the State Roads.

Allocation to other sub-sectors include: Administration with the sum of N16.05billion representing 22.89%, Education N11.8 billion representing 16.95%, Agriculture N6.1billion representing 8.71&, Health N4.4billion representing 6.32%. lands are urban development N3.5billion, representing 5.07%, commerce and industry N2.2billion represent 3.26%, water supply and energy N1.9bilion representing 2.80%, Women, Youth and Sports Development N1.3billion, representing 1.88% of the capital estimate. Also, the sum of N1.15billion is allocated to information and communication to execute the protects in this year’s budget which include, renovation of J.A. Gomwalk House and Old Standard building, N245million; bulk purchase of consumables at Plateau Publishing Corporation N100million, installation of Solar Power/Inverter N95.4million, Renovation of Plateau Printing Press and building of permanent studio, phase 1 N100million and N150million respectively.

Mrs. Weli further said that the state government is committed to repositioning the judiciary. To this end, the sum of N200 million has been earmarked for the completion of the High Court Complex and the renovation of Customary and Sharia of Court of Appeal. The sum of N1.06billion has also been allocated to tourism, culture and hospitality as intervening funds in the sub-sector with the sum of N150million approved for the completion of the indoor theater while Plateau State Tourism Corporation has been allocated the sum of N140million for the expansion and rehabilitation of Jos Wildlife Park. According to the commissioner, the subsector is in dire need of revitalization to serve as major source of revenue earning for the state. For the above reason, she said that government is going into public private partnership arrangement to revive Jos Hotel, Plateau Hotels, Solomon Lar Amusement park and Rock International Hotel. The commissioner said that government is committed to its implementation of the budget despite harsh economic realities of the time and further called on all to ensure the payment of their taxes and comply with other obligations to enable government achieve its laudable programmes.
