Stakeholders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in
Plateau State have applauded the effort of coalition of PDP Patriots aimed at
finding credible strategy to reinvent the PDP towards reclaiming power from the
ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) in 2019. Also, that the decision of the
Coalition is one urgent issue well timed.
The stakeholders expressed their views to African Drum recently with
regard to the party zonal meeting of the group held in Shendam, Plateau South
last week. According to Iliya Maikasuwa,
a stalwart of the party from Bassa LGA,
“definitely, we members of the PDP certainly have a lot to do to
strengthen our party because it remains the only option for Nigeria and
Nigerians in 2019. In the light of this,
I strongly commend the effort of coalition of PDP patriots for this initiative
of having dialogue with party faithful across the state starting from the Southern
Zone. It is a good idea”.
Also speaking to African Drum magazine, Hon. Ezekiel
P. Dakwa, another stakeholder from Foron Barkin Ladi LGA, said that democracy
ceases to be when one party rules and there is none to challenge it. “And it is only the PDP that can provide a
better opposition as a political party with better ideas and plans.
Unfortunately, Nigerians did not appreciate the PDP in 2015 and decided to make
a change and now they are already regretting their action, ultimately, they are
clamoring for yet another change come 2019 and PDP is the only credible
alternative. So, I appreciate the action
of the coalition of patriots”. He said.
Recall that the coalition of PDP patriots headed by Rt.
Hon. Titus Alams, former Speaker of the Plateau State House of Assembly,
recently embark on a state dialogue with party faithful to charter a new course
towards strengthening and invigorating the ideals of the party. The coalition started their state- wide
programme from southern zone (Shendam) on 9th December, 2016 and
promised to cover the other two zones soon. The gathering saw prominent members
of the party in attendance which included, Rt. Hon. Istifanus Mwansat former
Speaker, Plateau State House of Assembly (PLHA), Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Goar, former
Speaker, PLHA, Rt. Hon. Joyce Ramnap, former Deputy Speaker PLHA, Prof.
Shedrach Best, former Secretary to Plateau State Government (SSG), all the
party Chairmen and Secretaries from the zone among other dignitaries.
Delivering his paper, Mwansat who was also the guest
Speaker on the occasion, observed that the PDP is a product of Patriotic
thinking of serious minded democrats in the country adding that it is the
reason why the party was founded on a very solid foundation with a development
driven manifesto and well drafted constitution second only to the Nigerian
constitution.
The paper which he titled, “PDP, a party to beat
even in opposition”, the former speaker made it clear that since the
beginning of this democratic dispensation in 1999, the PDP held sway and was
able to established anti-corruption institutions still in use today as well as
economic and social infrastructures that uplifted the standard of living of
ordinary Nigerians.
He said that the PDP got to where it is today because
some members out of selfish interests refused to adhere to some sections of the
party constitution, which ought to be a binding force on all members. He
further gave instance where articles (B) 6:1, 12,3 and 17 among other sections
of the party constitution that suffered neglect as a result of impunity orchestrated
by a few members.
Hon Mwansat advised that the only way of the quagmire
which will also be a step towards reclaiming power was for members to go back
to the basics by upholding the provisions of the Constitution of the party.
All the party Chairmen from the zone expressed their
readiness for the Local Government election in the state and further promised
to deliver the zone for the PDP.
