The Acting Chairman of the Peoples
Democratic Party (PDP) in Plateau state Hon. Amos Gombi has said that he has
put behind him all that happened at the party Secretariat yesterday when a
serving Senator with some PDP members from Plateau Northern Zone in the
National Assembly allegedly stormed the state Secretariat of the party at about
6am on Monday for a purported State Executive meeting called by the state
Secretary of the party without the knowledge of the chairman.
Fracas was said
to have ensued when some party stalwarts and staff of the secretariat tried to
prevent them. It was said that the security personnel who accompanied the said
Senator started shooting in the air while some personnel in conjunction
with some thugs pounced on some staff of the secretariat. As a matter of fact,
the Personal Assistant to the Acting Chairman, Mr. Matthew was thoroughly beating
and had to be taken to hospital. All these happened when Gombi was said to be
on official duty to Akwa Ibom.
However, speaking to African Drum in his office this afternoon in reaction, Gombi said what happened yesterday at the Secretariat
was as a result of desperation by some people. He said he is in office as a
result of a resolution arrived at with the National Working Committee ( NWC ),
based on the recommendation of Senator David Mark's committee after the
withdrawal of a petition by some members of the state working committee (SEC)
against Hon. DT Sango and myself.
As a matter of
fact, the petitioners confessed that Sango was not guilty of all the
allegations but that they just wanted him to go. So, Sango agreed but on the
condition that he handed over to his deputy or the whole EXCO be dissolved.
This is one of the resolutions that was arrived at in agreement with all
stakeholders of the party from Plateau state, including members of the national
Assembly; Gombi stated that he is a man of integrity and would never renege on
any agreement that was made. “I will work based on the letter given to me by
the national Office of our party. Sango's tenure is about 3-4 months to end
after which I will leave the stage so that the Northern Zone will bring- in
those that will contest," said Gombi.

He noted that for anybody to say that the
constitution was not followed was baseless because according to him, the same
constitution was not also followed in the removal of Sango because the
petitioners withdrew their allegations in writing and that means Sango was not guilty
of the allegations. “So, he shouldn't have resigned in the first place but he
did in upholding to the resolutions arrived at with the NWC so why are they reneging? You can't
be talking of constitution yet you are acting illegally", said Hon. Gombi.
The chairman
recalled with nostalgia when he asked the Secretary of the party to call for an
EXCO meeting to brief members of a communication from the national secretariat
regarding guidelines for the congresses immediately Sango handed over to
him on December 5, but that the Secretary told him he had no instrument to call
for a meeting because he had no letter from the national Secretariat confirming
him the acting Chairman. Gombi said he agreed with the Secretary adding that,
that authority was conferred on him on Friday last week when the national
Secretariat issued him a letter confirming him as the Acting Chairman. He said
that probably that did not go down well with some people hence the reason for
the inglorious act yesterday. He however said that he has forgiven all and
further said that what happened would not deter him from continuing with
reconciliation process. Gombi regretted that lack of unity had really made the
PDP fallen shot of its responsibility as main opposition party in the state
