Counsel to Senator Jeremiah Useni
and the Peoples Democratic Party in the Plateau State Governorship Election
Petition Tribunal, Mike Ozhekome (SAN) has told the panel that the petitioners
were not asking for special favours but for justice. Ozhekome said this during
the inaugural sitting of the Tribunal at West of Mines Jos. The tribunal comprises of 3-member panel with
Justice Halima Salmat as Chairman. “We are not asking for special favour. We
are only asking that justice be done. I hope you represents the blind lady
holding a scale of justice who does not listen to the sirens of those in power”,
he said.
Ozkehome however, disagreed with
Justice Salmat when he referred to INEC as “Big Masquerade” stressing that the
electoral body has failed woefully in its statutory responsibility of
conducting free, fair, transparent and credible elections, the reasons why
parties were in court.
The Senior Advocate also disagreed
with the Plateau State Attorney-General and Commissioner of Justice, Chrysantus
Ahmadu when he said that Nigerian politicians don’t want to concede to
electoral defeat and were also fond of challenging the outcomes of elections at
the tribunal and will always complain on the outcome of judgment whichever way
it goes.
On this, Ozhkome still heaped the
blames on the door steps of INEC stressing that if INEC allows the votes of the
people count in free, fair, credible and transparent elections, nobody will go
to court.
Counsels to both the petitioners
and the respondents were however unanimous through a joint application for
adjournment to enable parties make all the necessary filings, service and
replies before pre- hearing. The application was granted and the matter
adjourned until 14 June 2019 for pre- hearing.
