Ahead of Plateau LG Polls: CP warns politicians

The Plateau State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Undie Adie has warned politicians to abide by the rules of engagement during the forthcoming local government elections in the state stressing that the police in the state was ready to dealt decisively with anyone who chooses to violate the rules and regulations guiding the conduct of the elections in line with the law of the land.

The Police Commissioner made this statement on Friday during joint security chiefs in Plateau State meeting with Plateau Independent Electoral Commission (PLASIEC), all registered political parties, the media and other critical stakeholders at the police offices mess.

Adie stated that the Police will work based on its mandate of providing adequate security before, during and after the elections and called on politicians to also observe the rules of engagement to ensure a successful exercise.

He further warned politicians against going around with escort and retinue of aides claiming to be monitoring the elections stressing that the police will not condone that kind of behaviour.

The Police boss also said that security agents that will be involved in the elections will not be engaged or assist in the act of vote buying.

He also said that movement of people would be restricted on Election Day except those on essential assignment and urged all to comply because according to the police commissioner, the restriction applied to all and there will be no sacred cows.

Given further explanation of the four local governments that would be exempted from the elections.
Adie said that the elections were only suspended because of the security situation in these areas and a suitable time would be considered in due course for elections to be conducted in these four local governments.

The CP stated that it was the police that is constitutionally mandated to carry fire arms during elections and further warned against conveyance of arms or other dangerous weapons to venues of elections by other persons other than the police.

Earlier, leaders of political parties in the state have unanimously observed that they were afraid that the elections would not be free, fair and credible taking into cognizance what happened during other elections in some states and hoped that the security will do the needful during the Local Government polls to avoid a breakdown of law and other.
