The city of Jos is like a ghost town following renewed hostilities at Dutse Ukwu, Rikkos and Farin Gada axis following the death of a young man discovered at Rikkos that sparked off another clash between the indigenes and Hausa residents yesterday.

The upheaval yesterday African Drum learnt was said to be in retaliation to violent protest last Friday along Rukuba Road/Gada Biyu axis which led to the destruction of valuable properties including the Gada Biyu police out-post.

Sources informed this magazine that the violence protest was sparked by the killing of 14 people by gun men suspected to be Fulani herdsmen and indiscriminate arrest of mourners by the security operatives.

The clash yesterday according to a source, led to the death of 3 people including a 300 level law student of the University of Jos, while many others were said to have been injured and were receiving treatments at various hospitals in Jos.

It was also said that before security operatives arrive at Rikkos the scene of the incident, wild rumours’ on the incident had spread to other parts of the town such as Bauchi Road, Kwana Shagari, Farin Gada, Tina Junction, Students Village among other areas, prompting the Plateau State Commissioner of Police Unda Undie to issue a warning statement asking residents of these areas to stay indoors to enable security operatives bring the incident under control.

Empty street leading to popular Terminus market this afternoon
Our man went round town this afternoon and reported that there were still some skirmishes around Anguwan Rukuba, Dutse-Uku and Tina junction as sound of gun shots were still heard. However, Terminus, Gada Biyu, Rukuba Road, Apata, Alheri areas were calmed while most of the streets were empty as shops and other business centres remained close whereas, people were seen in groups discussing in low tones.
All effort to speak with Major Umar, the STF Spokesman on the matter proved abortive as a phone call put through to him by our Editor went unanswered.
