TRADITIONAL RULER
URGES COMMUNITIES IN PLATEAU STATE TO PROMOTE PEACEFUL CO- EXISTENCE.

Communities in Plateau State have been called upon to promote
peaceful coexistence to enhance the growth of the State and its people. The
call was made by the Long Gamai, HRH Martins Shaldas, in his palace in Shendam
during an enlarged Peace and Security meeting of the Southern Senatorial
Zone of the state.
A statement by the Plateau state Commissioner of Information
and Communication Yakubu Dati quoted the royal father thus “we can only make
progress in an atmosphere of Peace where people will be free to pursue their
interests without fear”.
The statement stated
further that the Long Tehl Barrister Donald D. Puntehl who was the Chairman of
the organizing committee in his welcome remarks earlier, observed that their
main focus was sustaining the peaceful coexistence in the Zone.
It stated that Governor
Simon Bako Lalong who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Security,
Cornelius ShiolBial commended the initiators of the forum and urged other
communities to emulate commendable efforts of the forum. The Governor frowned
at promoters of hate speech, and called on communities to support government’s
efforts toward peace building.
The statement further quoted, Undie Adie, the Plateau State
Commissioner of Police, who said that rumors of impending attacks on
communities in the zone prompted him to attend the meeting to enable him get
clarification from stakeholders who were fully constituted and that the Police
force was fully mobilized to protect lives and property and further appealed to
the public to report any suspicious activity to the Police.
According to the statement, a cross section of Traditional
rulers, religious leaders, Women and Youth leaders refuted claims of rumoured
attacks saying it was being promoted by enemies of the state who wanted to
create perpetual fear in the minds of the people .
The Transition Committee Chairmen and Presidents of
Traditional Councils of the Local government areas in the zone were also said
to have pledged to sustain peace in the area and beyond while other security agencies
in the zone also resolved to combat crime and criminality of any
kind.
