SARAKI: COMMENDATIONS
TRAIL SUPREME COURT JUDGMENT
By Joseph A. Adudu

2018
Commendations continue to trail the Supreme Court Judgment
yesterday which freed Sakari of false assets declaration charge.
Richard Mipo, a political analyst based in Jos commended the
Supreme Court for its judgment noting that by the judgment, the Supreme Court
has further demonstrated that the judiciary is the last hope of the masses and
its independence as an unbiased arm of government. He said that the judgment
was a victory for democracy, restored hope and puts to final rest every attempt
by the executive arm to stiffen and silence the legislature from performing its
duty of checks and balances.
Another political enthusiast, Dr. Barnabas Dada said Sakari’s
victory at the Supreme Court had once again proved to Nigerians and the world that
men of the bench are responsible and people of impeccable character who will
never be intimidated or used as willing tools in the hands of the executive and
political cabals to put the legislative arm on its knee. According to him, it
was obvious that some vested interests in the executive arm in collusion with
some political cabals were trying to use the CCT to bring up unsubstantiated
allegations to tarnish the image of the senate president and also silence the
legislative arm which he presides upon.
Danile S. Mancha, a political activist in Bukuru Jos South
Local Government, Plateau State commended Saraki for his doggedness and the courage
he exhibited in the face of all the travails and political persecution unleashed
against him and stood strongly and made the legislative arm effective and
active to keep the executive arm on its toes at all times.
In his response, speaker Yakubu Dogara said no doubt, the
Supreme Court’s Judgment will help in no small way in strengthening the
independence of the legislature as the first organ of government under our
constitutional democracy and presidential system of government.
Recall that the Supreme Court on Friday discharged the Senate
President, Dr. Bukola Saraki of the false assets declaration charge preferred
against him by the Federal Government.
In a lead judgment delivered by Justice Centus Chima Nweze,
the apex court set aside the decision of the Court of Appeal and affirmed the
decision of the Court of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) which had earlier upheld Saraki’s
no case submission argued on his behalf by his counsel, Chief Kanu Agabi (SAN).
The CCT had discharged Saraki of the 18 count charge brought
against him by the Federal Government on the grounds that the prosecution
failed to proof its allegation beyond reasonable doubt. Saraki had challenged
the December 12, 2017 judgment of the Abuja division of the Court of Appeal
which gave the Federal Government the nod to re-open the criminal charge preferred
against him.
