The initiative for Monitoring Peace and Cultural Tolerance (I.M.P.A.C.T) a non-governmental organization based in Jos has described as unfortunate the recent postponement of Local Government Elections in Plateau State by the Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission (PLASIEC

In a statement signed by its Secretary-General Isaac Wadak, the organization further described PLASIEC’s decision as rape on democracy adding that it was quite unfortunate that the third tier of government in the State is the most abused because it is either legally elected structures at that level are dissolved arbitrarily and caretaker committees put in place or elections are not held or postponed.

I.M.P.A.C.T also took with pinch of salt, insecurity being the reason advanced by PLASIEC for the postponement stressing that only recently, on 12th January, 2018 to be précised, Governor Simon Bako Lalong assured President Muhammadu Buhari that peace has been restored in the state.     According to the statement; it therefore, smacks of insincerity and double speaks to use security as reason to postpone the election.

The statement called on PLASIEC to do the needful by working out modalities and quickly conducted council polls to ensure the restoration of democracy at that level. It also called on PLASIEC to come clean on the faith of candidates who have committed huge amount of money and other resources into electioneering process.
