CAF CHAMPIONS LEAGUE: LALONG, UNITED SET TO MAKE ANOTHER HISTORY
By Joseph A Adudu
10th February, 2018
Governor Simon Bako Lalong of Plateau State and Plateau United Football club, Nigeria’s representatives of this year Confederation of African Football (CAF) Champions League are on the verge of making history again as they are set to host Eding Sport Football Club of Cameroun tomorrow in the first match, first leg of the prestigious tournament at the new stadium along Zaria Road Jos.

Recall that the “Lalong Boys” (as Plateau United is fondly called) against all odds put an impressive performance in the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPLF) last season which reached its apogee after beating Rangers International Football Club of Enugu on the last day of the season and were subsequently crowned league champions of the NPFL at the Rwang Pam township stadium for the first time in the club’s history; a feat that has also never been achieved by any other club in Plateau State.

Right from the onset of the competition when the Plateau team took the lead on the league table, Governor Lalong left no one in doubt that he was determined to ensure that the jinx was broken and the elusive football title came to the state at the end of the competition. Unlike many contemporary politicians, the governor matched words with action not only by pouring much-needed funds into the team, but also took a step further by being personally involved in the running of the affairs of the club so much so that he was never absent at the team’s home matches in spite of his crowded schedules. Not for once was there bickering of any sort between the players and their handlers as so often happens among other teams even at the national level.

Though the coach Kennedy Boboye boys would be playing in the CAF Champions league for the first time with no continental experience like Eyinmba FC of Abba or Kano Pillars FC of Kano, sport enthusiasts however believed that if they put in the rugged determination, cohesion and team-spirit they exhibited last season which ultimately earned them the crown, the team can equally pull surprises at the continental stage.
Gov. Lalong
Speaking to African Drum this afternoon, most sport enthusiasts called on football-lovers and supporters of Plateau United to come out en-mass tomorrow to cheer the club to victory so that the return leg in Cameroon would be a mere formality.
