President Buhari |
WE
WANT HIM AGAIN IN 2019 – TAPLE, GUJOR
By

01 December, 2017
Last month, the Buhari Support Group, an
Amalgamation of about 189 different support groups that worked for President
Muhamadu Buhari and the All Progressive Congress (APC) recently hinted that he
has no option but to contest the 2019 election. Just few days ago, some
prominent politicians in Plateau State also expressed same opinion believing
that it is only Buhari that has the capacity to bring Nigeria back on track
taking into cognizance his superlative performance as President in less than
three years.
Hon.
Barrister Robert Taple, the Chairman Plateau State Local Government Service
Commission, and Hon. Nanle Gujor, a Senior special Assistant in the Lalong
administration have all poured encomium on President Muhammadu Buhari over his
performance which they described as “marvellous and milestone achievements” in
less than three years of his administration which according to them, are the
reasons why every right thinking Nigerian should seek and support his
re-election in 2019. Speaking to African
Drum in Jos recently, Taple said, “I would want to say that Buhari with the
change agenda has done very well knowing full well what Nigerians are.
Nigerians are a very difficult set of people and Buhari’s government is doing
its best.
But the truth is that I don't want to believe that the people that surround him have captured this change mantra. I know that Buhari is going to come back in 2019 by the grace of God if he's alive because people actually appreciate what he is doing. How will they expect Nigeria to blossom as it were when the past regime has stolen the whole country blind? If he did not emerge as President, I don't know where you and I would have been today because that is the plain truth that Nigerians don't want to hear. The opposition does not want to hear about that. It is the reason why they are fighting the corruption war. But I want to say that I am so happy that the president is focused”.

On
the war against insurgency, Taple said, “anybody who says he is a failure in
the war against insurgency is not sincere. These are the enemies of the
government because before this man came in, you would hear of bombings in
Abuja, Jos and other places, but they have been so restricted to soft targets
in the north east zone because they are not as mobile as they used to be. So
they are attacking soft targets, and how can someone say that the war on
insurgency is a failure? These are the enemies of Nigeria and they will fail
because Nigeria will win this war?
Also
speaking on the issue, Hon. Nanle Gufor said, “Yes, I have supported and I will
continue to support President Muhammadu Buhari. I have passion for his
philosophy. He has been able to fight corruption and insurgency to minimal
levels. You see, it takes longer time to effect correction or restructure what
has been destroyed. As you know, it is easy to destroy but difficult to build.
We all know how this country was before 2015 and I actually don’t know what it
would have become of it if Buhari had not emerged. I will go with Buhari come
rain, come shine because he is one person who does not discriminate” just like
Ali the customs boss said some weeks back, Gujor is also of the view that there are
cabals in the Buhari administration who have been making frantic efforts to
scuttle his good plans for this country.
This
is even as the President has commended various support groups working for the
progress of his administration, saying posterity will reward their sacrifices
for the peace, progress and prosperity of the nation.
Few
weeks back, Buhari support group led by Abu Ibrahim and Senate Leader, Ahmed Lawan
that was in the Presidential Villa to meet with him to intimate him on the
activities of the group said the group believed in his philosophy. The group
also believes Buhari can ensure the “progress, stability and prosperity of the
nation.
According
to Ibrahim, “Well, we came here as members of the national committee of the Buhari
support group. This is an amalgamation of about 189 different support groups
that had worked for President Muhammadu Buhari and the APC to win the 2015
general election. We have been holding meetings, discussing the problems of
this country, Nigeria. So, we thought it was high time we meet with the
President to intimate him about the activities of the group.

“We
discussed with him about the plans to improve the situation in Nigeria. Mr
President was very pleased with our programmes”.
Asked
why the group was trying to convince him to contest the 2019 presidential
election, Ibrahim said, “Well, that didn’t come up actually. We only discussed
the programmes of the organisation and problems of the group. But we didn’t go
into the 2019 elections”.
Asked
if the group is going to encourage him to contest, Ibrahim said, “Yes. Because
I believe in his philosophy and I believe he can solve the problems of this
nation”.
Lawan,
on his part said it is not enough to help a party win election but also to
support the government of the day to succeed. “You know it is not enough to
help in elections like most of us did. It is important that we continue to
support the President and his administration across the nation as a group, this
is what we will continue to support the President and his administration across
the nation as a group and this is what we will continue to do. We will continue
to identify with and support all the programmes that this administration has
set forward. And I believe that we have every justification to be happy
because, the President campaign on three major pillars of anti-corruption,
fighting the insecurity across the country and revitalising the economy of
Nigeria. It has been a very good journey so far and also we believe that Mr
President and Nigerians have a future beyond 2019. What he has started, by the
grace of God, he should be able to complete, up to 2023”.
Asked
the areas Buhari could improve upon ahead of 2019, Lawan said, well, we have
issues we think that the administration will be dealing with very successfully,
now that we have economic recovery and growth plan which encapsulates
everything we need to move Nigeria forward. Now that Nigerians have continued
to show love for Mr President, I believe that we are going to achieve those things
that we have set for ourselves at the moment. I also believe that the future is
bright and by the grace of God, by 2019, we would have achieved so much in this
administration and Mr President will have no option but continue the good work
he has started”
In
a statement later released by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and
Publicity, Femi Adesina said, President Buhari assured group of the judicious
use of available national resources for the betterment of all Nigerians.
“I
am grateful for your sacrifices. Your work requires a lot of sacrifices both
physical and material. I do not think anybody will join this organisation for
material reasons. What you are doing is for the nation and not for me as an
individual. Therefore, there is no way you can lose because what you are doing is
for prosperity”. He said.

Also last month, President Buhari supporters,
under the aegies of the Buhari Support Organisation (BSO), openly beckoned on
him to seek a second term of four years, while opening his campaign office in
the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The
gathering brought together some serving governors, ministers, and other
appointees, who called themselves “Buharists”, even as they declared war
against cabinet members considered to be working against the president’s
interest.
In
attendance were Governors Mohammed Abubakar (Bauchi), Yahaya Bello (Kogi) and
Simon Lalong (Plateau); Ministers of Information and Culture, Alhaji Ali
Mohammed; Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Mohammed Bellow; Defence, Mansur
Mohammed Dan Ali; Niger Delta, Pastor UsaniUguruUsani; and minister of State
for Health, OsahieEhabire, as well as Chairman of the occasion, Senator
Olorunimbe Mamora, among many others.
Head
of BSOI in the pre-2015 pools and presently comptroller General of Nigeria
Customs Service (NCS), Col. Hammed Ali, lamented that Buhari’s government has
been hijacked by 50 per cent opposition People Democratic Party (PDP) members
serving as cabinet members, promising aggrieved supporters that the issue would
be looked into. He said: “When we were there working and jumping on the street
and reaching every corners, we were shouting change, change for a better
Nigeria. Now, the key word is good governance for Nigerians.

“We
must agree that we cannot finish our four years without delivering and leaving
something to be remembered for in this country for a long time to come. We have
no problem with our president, because he is on course, “But I must confess
here that we have been infused by people who were not part of this journey and
these people are the one that call the shots today. This is why we are
derailing.
“If
we had the right people who had the vision and have been there in andout, I believe
we would not, I believe we would not be going the way we are going today.
It
is my belief that those of us who have been in the trenches all these years to
get good governance will surely be sleeping with belly ache every day,
especially in the recent past. Every day, when you wake up, there is a story
that makes you shiver. We cannot, as a people who have fought and committed
everything we had to bring this government to being, sit back and allow things
to happen the way they are happening.
“At
the end of the day, the fingers will point at us, because we were the ones who
went to people and urged them to give us their votes. These people that are
calling the shots today were not there and when the chips are down, they will
disappear and melt within the system. We are the ones that will be asked to
account for what happened.
“Are
we willing to face Nigerians and tell them that we have failed? I think this is
the time for us to come together, create a system that is very robust enough to
fight back and take back government in our hands and ensure that we deliver”.
He however, called on all the support groups to “go back to the study room”,
adding: “This is a commission, but it is also the beginning of the fight for
good governance. We must get back to the trenches, draw our own battle plan and
battle line.
“I
enjoin you with that same commitment we had in 2015, I implore you to bear with
us and commit yourself to a better future for Nigeria”. Lalong who reinforced
Ali’s assertions, added that some of them who are governors, too, were not
carried along when appointments were made.
Hon. Gujor |
“Let
Mr President be aware that this is the time to do it, because even as
governors, we are also complaining in our various states. We complained in our
state that while we are here, sitting down, we hear appointments made and then
people start asking, you are the governor, where is this man coming from? But
when we turn right and turn left, we don’t know where such man is coming from.
Many
people have complained. I’, sure governors have complained that we should be
able to know who and who will protect Mr President and his administration, so
that when you appoint him and you find him guilty or you find him wanting, hold
the governor responsible, because in our various states when we established
BSO, we also had BSO.

“But
today when we turned back and find out that they are not enjoying, it means
that something is wrong and that is the wrong we have pointed out and we must
be very brave to say it”.
Abubakar,
who said he was not part of the BSO at the beginning, but believe in the vision
of the President, asked the supporters to continue the support, saying; “It is
incumbent on us to support the BSO to succeed”. Earlier, despite his silence on
the issue, a group of lawmakers, under the aegies of Buhari Support Group
(BSG), yesterday said the President has what it takes to lead the country
beyond 2019.
Addressing
state house correspondents after a closed-door meeting with Buhari at the
Presidential villa, leader of the group Senator Abu Ibrahim, said even though
the issue did not form the crux of their meeting, members were poised to
mobilise massive support for his re-election in 2019.
He
said BSG, which is an umbrella platform of about 180 different support
organisation that worked for the party’s victory in 2015, believe in Buhari’s
philosophy and capacity to solve the myriad of challenges facing the country,
as well as facilitate stability, prosperity and progress. Hence the group has
been holding series of meetings and discussing the problems of Nigeria and how
to improve the situation in the country.
