The Plateau
State Command of the Nigerian Police has reported that a middle aged man and a
staff of Industrial Court Jos Division, Victor Buba Dashit is being detained
for allegedly killing his wife Irene who was 8 months old pregnant. The accused
allegedly committed the offence on their farmland on the 2nd day of
June, 2017. According to a source, late Irene was working with the Plateau
State Ministry of Education posted to Government Secondary School, West of
Mines as a teacher.
LATE IRENE |
Sources
close to the family informed African Drum that late Irene, a mother of two, was
constantly battered by her husband aside other marital squabbles. This Magazine
further learnt that sometimes in May last year, late Irene caught her husband
having carnal knowledge of the housemaid (name withheld). The housemaid further
confessed that she has been having an affair with Victor for more than year,
stressing that it happens almost every day after dropping Rene at her place of
work. She further confessed that their illicit affairs have led to pregnancy.
It is said that late Irene reported the matter to her mother and mother-in-law
but instead of addressing the issue, her mother-in-law expressed displeasure
over her decision to report her son to her mother on the matter.
Noting that
nobody was willing to intervene on the matter, she decided to send the
housemaid back to the village. That decision seemed to have compounded her
problem which prompted her to pack out of her marital home in August 2016 to stay
with her mother. It is further said that her husband never made any effort to
return her home. When schools resumed in September that year, she returned to
Jos but was putting up with her younger sister until her Pastor intervened and
reconciled her with her husband.
African
Drum further learnt that on that fateful day, she was at the farm planting tamba seed (a local cereal used in
preparing gruel) where her husband allegedly strangled her to death, after
which he took her body to Air Force Hospital, where the doctor confirmed her
death. Her body was rushed to the theatre for CS to save the child in the womb
but unfortunately, it was too late. The child too died.

However,
the doctor was said to have not been satisfied with the explanation given by Victor,
said to be the circumstance that led to Irene’s death after a close examination
of her body, which revealed some marks and cuts around her neck. Incidentally,
it was the same doctor that examined her two days ealier when she came to the
hospital for ant-natal. Victor had told the medical personnel at the hospital
that late Irene complained of dizziness and later collapsed, adding that a man
volunteered to assist him to convey her to the hospital after shouting for
help.
But the
Medical Director of the hospital was said to be highly suspicious when he
noticed blood stain around her neck and called the attention of the Air Police
who in turn reported the matter to the Police in Anglo-Jos Police Station, who
promptly arrested Victor and transferred the case to Rantya Police Division for
further investigation after which the case was further transferred to State CID
for onward investigation.
An autopsy
was conducted on the body and the result showed secondary injuries to the neck
and brain. It is also said that Victor has already confessed to having killed
his wife.
The Police
Public Relations Officer Plateau State Command, Mr. Terna Tyope confirmed the
incident to African Drum Magazine adding that investigation is still ongoing.
