Women's Rights Advancement and Protection Alternative (WRAPA) on Wednesday
organized a strategic meeting between Coordination Committees, Legislators and
Plateau State Government for effective implementation of the model laws on
Social and Empowerment Program on Women's Rights in Kaduna and Plateau States.
They are Gender Equal Opportunity (GEO) and Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP).
The event which was held at City Lodge Hotel Jos and tagged"Coalition
Project" also had in attendance members of the Civil Society Organizations
(CSOs). Plateau State Program Officer for WRAPA, Mrs Jummai Madaki said
the aim of the meeting was to sustained and advanced high-level engagements for
the effective implementation of the model laws.
The GEO Law and VAPP are very critical to addressing issues of Gender based
violence.WRAPA implemented the Haki Mkononi project in 2015 and the Equality
now SIDA and SOAWR 2020 both of which immensely contributed to the passage of
the VAPP in Kaduna state GEO Law in Plateau State. The current
project being funded by AWDF, seeks to continue on the gains made towards
implementation. Mrs Madaki said though WRAPA had embarked on series of
advocacy, today's program is to garner the supports and buy-in of key
state actors on the approval and adoption of VAPP Bill in Plateau State and
implementation of the GEO law which both seek to eliminate gender based
violence against women and children and promote equal for beneficiaries of the
project intervention (Women and Children).
A Communique is expected at the end of the meeting.
