RECENT STATEMENT BY JANG AGAINST THE YOUTH IS SAID TO BE DIRECTED AT HIS POLITICAL PROTÉGÉ

Political pundits have observed that the recent statement by Senator Jonah David Jang, Senator representing Plateau North, that the Red Chamber is not for young people was actually directed at his political protégés from the Zone who are warming up to contest for the senate seat in the 2019 general elections in the hope that Jang, who is over 70 might not re-contest

However, there are strong indications that some of them are ready to slug it out with the senator in the event that he does not retire from politics as they believe his political weight has diminished since he left Government House as Governor and that he can be defeated given the new re-alignments in the state. Protégés of Jang who owe their political fortunes to the former Governor like Istifanus Gyang and Edward Pwajok both members of the House of Representatives are believed to be interested in contesting for the senate seat.

Gyang is with the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, while Pwajok is with the All Progress Congress, APC. Posters indicating their interest have many times flooded the streets of Jos.

Jang, during a live radio programme two days ago monitored from our newsroom ruled out the chance of handing over to a younger person in 2019 when he said ”the senate is not for young people”, stressing that it is the House of Representative that is ideal for them. The statement drew so much condemnation from observers with many describing it as careless.
