Chairmanship aspirants in the forthcoming local government elections in Plateau State under the platform of the Action Democratic Party (ADP) have expressed their desire to provide good governance so as to uplift the standard of living of the people. The aspirants made this submission today after picking their forms at the state party secretariat at No. 7 Dogon Karfe Jos which has witnessed beehive of activities of recent.
According to our reporter, six chairmanship aspirants picked their forms while more than 18 councillorship aspirants picked theirs today alone. Those who picked the Chairmanship form are: Benjamin Y. Pakbong for Mikang, Daniel Kura for Langtang North, Haladu Shanawi for Wase; Rev. M.D. Adams for Bokkos and Godwin Audu for Langtang South. Those who picked the form for councillorship are from various wards in Mangu, Langtang North, Langtang South, Bokkos, Kanke and Shendam LGAs.

Some of the Chairmanship aspirants spoke to African Drum on their plans for the people at the grass-root if given the mandate. According to Benjamin Pakbong, skills acquisition and girl child education would be his topmost priorities. “I want to make positive change in the lives of youth and women. I also want to make skills acquisition and girl child education a topmost priority. Unlike what is obtainable today where the so called skills acquisition programme is run for 3 months our administration would be realistic and the programme will run in not less than 12 months so that beneficiaries will be properly trained. The girl child will also be properly engaged to avoid being idle which promotes anti-social activities.” He said. He added that farmers will be given the necessary incentives without discrimination to boost agriculture, while the primary health care programmes would be reviewed to conform with its original mandate of providing adequate health care at the grassroots.

On his part, Daniel Kura, the chairmanship aspirant for Langtang North said the desire to provide true dividends of democracy is his motivation for the race. He said if given the mandate, children and pregnant women will receive free medical services except where there are complications and that he would establish special clinic for that purpose. Kura added that children from 0 – 5 years will also receive free medical services. In the area of agriculture, he said farmers will have the opportunity of receiving free highly improved seedlings to boost agriculture in the locality. To this end, the aspirant promised to give 10,000 seedlings and nursery each of palm trees, paw paw, cassava and Banana among others. He said the local government headquarters itself will go into fish farming and that fishing ponds will be created so as to engage the Agric. Department instead of being redundant.

The state Chairman of the ADP, Chief Amb. Nanyah Andrew Daman JP said that the party will fill in Chairmanship candidates for the 17 local governments and councillorship candidates in all the 207 wards in the state.
