A
Chairmanship aspirant under the platform of the Action Democratic Party (ADP) Mr.
Daniel Kura has said that PLASIEC’s fee for nomination forms and administrative
charges for the chairmanship and the councillorship positions as contained in
the Time Table and Guidelines for Local Government elections recently released
by the electoral body in Plateau State are exorbitant and not in line with
democratic tenets. According to him, the intended election is for the people at
the grassroots which is the closest to them adding that the traits that ought
to be the selling points of any candidate for the election should be integrity,
sincerity, promise keeping and dedication. According to him, with the latest
development, even if an aspirant possessed the above mentioned attributes but
does not have money, would not have the opportunity of serving his community
even if he or she is their choice.
He
questioned the modality PLASIEC used at arriving at such exorbitant fees
wondering if the electoral umpire has turned a revenue generating agency “look
at the cost of purchasing form for the position of chairmanship. PLASIEC has
slammed N300,000.00 for the form and N50,000.00 as administrative charges. For
the councillorship, PLASIEC slammed N150,000.00
and N20,000.00 for the form and
administrative charges respectively. To me, this is another way of denying the
people at the grassroots the emergence of credible people and good governance
at that level. This development has made me wonder whether PLASIEC is no longer
an electoral umpire but a revenue generating agency”.
Kura,
who is a chairmanship aspirant for Langtang North Local Government lamented
that with the current development, it has become glaring that PLASIEC is out to
destroy democracy and good governance at the grass root level.
