GRASSROOT FOOTBALL: CHECK CUP KICKS OFF ON SUNDAY

The yearly “Check Cup” football tournament is scheduled to take off on Sunday, 6th August, 2017 at ECWA Football Field Angwan Suya Jos. The tournament which was introduced about 24 years ago is named after the donor of the trophy, Kehinde Momoh popularly known as ‘Check’. Speaking exclusively to African Drum, Momoh said the aim of the tournament was to discover hidden talent as well as enhancing unity among different ethnic nationalities on the Plateau.”The main aim of this tournament is to discover talents and to cement the bond of unity among the different ethnic nationalities on the Plateau being a cosmopolitan state and I want to thank God because our aim has been achieved taking into cognizance the category of footballers that have been discovered through this tournament. Many footballers have used this tournament as a springboard to higher heights”
According to him, those footballers that participated or that the tournament discovered include, Sambo Choji who played for Plateau United, Soarbuchenr F.C. Germany,  Joseph Obianwa ( Alias Bebeto) who played for FC Moleenbick in Belgium, Aweh Bala, who played for NIPOST and Wikki Tourist, Victor Dick, played for Plateau United and currently based in Austria, Maboh, who played for CBN, JC Raiders and other clubs in Qatar and Dubai, Paulinus Anakwe. He played for J.C Raiders, David Abwo, who played for J.C. Raiders and a club in Turkey, Orji, who played for Wikki Tourist, others who also played in the tournament are Hon. Lumumba Da Adeh, former Member House of Representative and Mr James Dalyop, Permanent Secretary, Plateau State Ministry of Sports; among others too numerous to mention.
Asked whether there are sponsors for the tournament, he said that it has never been sponsored either by individuals or corporate bodies but through his personal efforts. On his feeing towards the success and achievements of those that participated or were discovered through his tournament, Momoh said he felt fulfilled knowing that he has also contributed in their success stories.

He added that this year’s tournament is in memory of late Joseph Obianwa because he won the golden boot of the maiden edition of the tournament
29 teams have registered for this year’s tournament and are grouped into five places as shown below. The opening match is between Mighty Stars Vs Super France by 3pm. According to the organizers, all FIFA rules would be applied. There shall also be a maximum of five substitutes per match. Also, any club that is late for fifteen minutes after kick – off time shall be walked over and any team that attacks a referee or any match official shall be disqualified from the tournament. No players are not allowed to play for multiple teams, whereas, protest fee attracts the sum of three thousand naira. All these formed part of the rules and regulations for the tournament. All things being equal, the event would be concluded on 23rd August, 2017.
