Youths have been advised to discover their talents in addition to their academic pursuits in other fields. This was the submission of Mrs. Ononubi, one of the organizers of a one-day exhibition at Hill Crest –Hillcrest, a K-12th grade International Christian School with an American curriculum based in Jos, Plateau State, Nigeria.

Most of the exhibitors that spoke with African Drum expressed satisfaction with the degree of patronage and collaborated the position of the organizers by calling on their peer groups to look inward and discover their talents. They believe that every human being is created with a hidden talent and all one needed to do was to discover it. They also called on parents to motivate and encourage their children instead of being a terror. According to them, “some parents are bad news to their children”.

One of the exhibitors that have attracted large patronage is Abba Wadak, a young golfer and a designer. According to him, his dream is to build a conglomerate aimed at offering variety of service to include aeronautic engineering services, fashion designing among others. He appreciated his parent for living up to their responsibility adding that he has been highly motivated by their support.

The magazine spoke with some people that patronized Wadak at his stand and they all applauded his ingenuity. Speaking to African Drum on talent discovery, Dr. Emmanuel B. Dabit, an educationist. said our institutions are not living up to their responsibilities. He said that the essence of Guidance and Counseling units in institutions is to help children discover their talents. “For certain reasons, some children found themselves taking courses which do not reflect or fall in line with their nature. If you want to study a course, that should be out of passion but this is not what we see these days. Because of lack of guidance and counseling, students

bulldozed their ways into reading courses that are not in agreement with their nature, and what that means is that these graduates just passed through the school system to get the certificate and when it comes to practicality, they are always found wanting.

Another issue is that, we were not all created to attend universities and to obtain degrees. No, a university degree is not the ultimate. The ultimate thing is your talent which you need to discover and that will make the difference. I therefore, commend the efforts of Hill Crest for their yearly exhibition because that exercise has the capacity of revealing the hidden treasure in every child” he said.
