The Plateau North Senatorial District first ever Peace, Unity and Reconciliation Football Tournament kicked off on Thursday with the Senator representing the District at the National Assembly, ID Gyang distributing kits to all the 73 electoral wards in the six local government areas that make up the zone.
Speaking further in his brief remarks at the occasion, Sen. Gyang said that the tournament was an initiative and mechanism for peace building in Plateau North stressing that the intention and desire was to drive the agenda of promoting peace, unity and reconciliation as the game of football has proven to be a unifying factor among Nigerians defying all divisive tendencies, prejudices and sentiment.
According to the Senator, “the tournament will also enable us attain the objective of availing the youth opportunity to showcase their talents in football artistry and provide entertainment for football enthusiasts”.
It was also his firm believed that through the tournament, talents shall be discovered from the grassroot that will be developed and groomed to become professional players in the near future producing the likes of Ahmed Musa (the current national captain of the Super Eagels) who was equally present at the occasion and the Senator considered Musa’s presence a privilege.
He appreciated members of the LOC for accepting to serve in planning the tournament, adding that given their technical know-how and expertise in the game of football, the tournament shall be a huge success.
Sen. I. D Gyang reiterated his admonition to the LOC and coaches at the Ward levels that the tournament had no room for any form of segregation be it political, ethnic, religious or whatever because it was an all inclusive and unifying tournament aimed at enhancing togetherness and harmony so as to attain the overall objective of building peace, unity and reconciliation in Plateau North.
