The honorable minister of Women
Affairs and Social Development, Dame Pauline Tallen has said that to ensure a
healthy and peaceful society, the campaign against any form of violence against
women and children must be sustained.
The minister made
this statement while receiving members of the Plateau Publishers Association
(PPA) who paid her a visit at her residence in Jos on Sunday. Tallen noted
that she was in Jos in continuation of advocacy on the girl-education in line
with the United Nations ( UN ) demand which has declared 16 days for
activism against gender based violence and rape. “The program kicked off on
November 25 and would be concluded on Tuesday (that is next tomorrow) but that
doesn't mean that after Tuesday, the campaign would stop. No, the United
Nations has given 16 days for active participation in advocacy for the world to
know that we detest rape; we detest domestic and any other form of violence
against women and children. The advocacy must continue until we have a healthy
and peaceful society", she said.
According to the
minister, the advocacy was on Mortality, women empowerment and political
participation, stressing that educating the girl child has multiplier effect. “If
you educate a woman, you are automatically building a healthy society.
For instance, the girl child today is a potential mother tomorrow. If she is
well educated, she would ensure her children are equally well educated and her
family well catered for in all ramifications", said the minister. The
honourable minister further noted that for the 17 SDG goals to achieved its
desired mission, the woman has to be at the center of everything. Tallen
appreciated and commended PPA for the good job its members have been doing and
solicited for its support in the dissemination of information to the grassroots
against domestic and other forms of violence against women and children.
