A group known as The Concerned Jos Youths Association
(COJOYA), has expressed dismay over the increasing activities of group of gangsters
in Jos North L.G.A known as Sara-Suka.
The Youth group make this known during a one-day interactive
session with community leaders and elders of though in Jos North Local
Government Area on the way to curb the menace of the cult group. Barrister
Buhari Nashehu Mai Kyau, the leader of the COJOYA in his presentation observed
that the ugly activities of gangsters was gaining more momentum to the extent
that a great percentage of the youths in the community are engaged in one
activity of gangsterism or the other.
“it is on record that the various gangs do have clashes
amongs themselves almost on a daily basis leading to serious injuries and even
killing of one another. The ugly trend has degenerated from clashes among
various gangs to attacks on innocent and neutral members of the society, so
much so that virtually every member of the society is a potential victim”, said
Mai Kyau.
He said that the effect of the menace of the gang
groups on the economic, social wellbeing of community members where enormous
which include general in-security of lives and property, loss of lives, grievous
injuries, constant fears and apprehension among members of the society, waste
of money and other resources in treatment of the injured and general economic
backwardness among others. The Youth Leader attributed some the causes of gangsterism
to parental negligence, societal dormancy, prevalence of drug peddlers and drug
abuse, lack of synergy between security agencies and communities as well as
political reasons.
Consequently, Mai Kyau observed on the way forward
that there must be a strong and proper synergy between parents, community,
religious leaders, security agencies and the Youths to bring an end to all
forms of gangsterism in Jos particular and Plateau State at large.
The Youth Leader noted that information and orientation
play vital role in shaping every society stressing that knowing the dangers and
implications of certain actions will make most people to avoid engaging in such
acts. He added that most youths who engaged in Sara-Suka and other forms of
gangsterism lack the basic elementary western and Islamic Education as most of
them where dropped out.
“There is therefore the needs to organize revival and
permanent orientation and reorientation committee which shall comprise of
religious scholars, community leaders, youth leaders and seasonal social
workers. Vocal experienced and respected religous scholars and leaders of thought
shall be use in this aspect”, said the youth leader.
As its terms of reference, Bar. Mai Kyau said that the
said committee shall be the first to contact with members of Sara-Suka and
engage in massive public preaching, seminars and public lectures on the
implications of deliberately hurting or even killing another person, Visitations
to the dens and jungles/invitation of the Sara-Suka gang members to a secured
place for interaction, discussions and admonitions so as to direct, re-direct
and change the mind set of members of the various gangs, organizing peace
talks, reconciliation among various warring groups and showing them the
importance of peace and love for one another, it shall also target younger
persons who have the potentials of becoming gang members through organizing
peace symposia, seminar, carrier talks to young persons of 18-24 years and
encouraging them on various social affairs.
The committee also tasked parents

put into use all the available and appropriate tools/resources to achieve its
aim, which include: Media (TV, Radio Stations, News Paper and Pamphlets) Social Media/Public Enlightenment Campaigns, Person to
